Shillong, Sep 4: The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) has flagged difficulties faced by patients in availing benefits under the Meghalaya Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS) outside working hours of hospital facilitation centres.
In a letter to the MHIS Chief Executive Officer, FKJGP president Dundee Cliff Khongsit said MHIS registration is done only between 9.30 am and 6 pm, while medical emergencies can occur anytime.
Patients arriving after hours and requiring admission, medicines and tests are forced to bear expenses out-of-pocket, causing hardship particularly for economically weaker families, the organisation said.
The federation appreciated MHIS for helping poor families but urged the department to explore a mechanism to ensure coverage for emergency treatment beyond facilitation centre hours.
