East Khasi Hills police have begun conducting vice raids and launching “vigorous” patrols in areas of Shillong for the safety of the public.
Police have been criticised in the past for being largely invisible after 8pm and that free-for-all atmosphere ended up in a blatant attack on Laitumkhrah police station earlier this month by thugs.
Today, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Sylvester Nongtngnger said that vice raids were conducted with the help of women police commandos at Motphran, Paltan Bazar, Mawblei, Nongrim Hills, Laitumkhrah Bazar, Mawlonghat, Urkaliar, Upper Shillong, Polo, Mawbah, Jhalupara and Upper Mawprem.
A huge haul of 112.097 litres of IMFL and 774.000 litres of indigenous alcohol were seized in these raids over the weekend.
Foot patrols have also been intensified in the areas around Khyndailad to take action against sex workers “whose acts of soliciting customers are not only illegal but many a time the cause for many law and order problems:”, Nongtngnger said.
Cases under the Immoral Trafficking Prevention Act were registered against 15 sex workers who were apprehended.
The Shillong Traffic Police are also conducting day and night vehicle checking at various locations for offences of drunken driving, riding two-wheelers without a helmet, modified silencers, tinted glasses and other Motor Vehicle Act offences. In the preceding week, 277 vehicles were compounded and Rs 2.365 lakh was realised in fines by violators.
