The Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills today invoked Section 144 of the CrPC to order a ban on the throwing of trash, discharge of effluent into the lake or areas adjacent in East Khasi Hills.
The order comes in the wake of a Meghalaya High Court direction on October 3. The court had been unsatisfied with efforts taken by the state government to halt further pollution of the reservoir, pointing to restaurants, cafes, stalls of various kinds and vehicle showrooms all operating close to the water and contributing to pollution of the lake.
The DC’s order came into effect immediately and was issued on October 13 but shared with the media only today.
