Following a deadly fire that claimed the lives of two children in the city last week, the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills has issued a list of preventive measures to avoid further tragedy.
These include being cautious of open flames and naked lamps, taking care while smoking, isolating flammable substances and storage, carrying out periodic checks of all electrical appliances, using electronic appliances that are BIS/ISI certified, keeping hay stacks and straw a safe distance from homes, careful use of firecrackers, closing the gas cylinder regulators when not in use, etc.
In case of fire, the public should inform the nearest fire station, police station or first responders. The specific type of fire (normal/electrical/petroleum/etc) should be mentioned, along with the correct address and shortest route to the scene of the blaze.
