President of the Hill State People’s Party (HSPDP), KP Pangniang has said that the drive against tourist taxis was an act of frustration for want of Inner Line Permit (ILP).
Pangniang said that the pressure groups and indigenous community want implementation of ILP and other mechanisms to curb influx and so are the political parties.
He pointed out that even the state government through a resolution in the Meghalaya Assembly had urged the centre to implement the ILP in the state. “We the political parties and the pressure groups need to put pressure on the centre,” he added.
When asked if the drive against tourists by the pressure is a reasonable idea, he said that the entry and exit of vehicles which have registration from outside Meghalaya, make the people of the state believe that influx can happen through this means too.
“It puts the indigenous community in danger if there is no mechanism to check the movement of outsiders,” Pangniang said.
