Though the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) and the Hynñiewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) have always shared a common goal and have been partnering closely on varied issues of the state, the former is “perturbed” with the latter’s action yesterday.
Soon after the sudden drive by the HNYF against Assam registered tourist taxis, the KSU and the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), under the aegis of the North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) had a discussion on the matter.
A joint statement by AASU and KSU today said, “While discussing the same, the KSU states that the organisation is not aware of any such incident of stopping vehicles from Assam and it firmly does not conform to any such initiative.”
The two student bodies allay fears among people visiting Meghalaya saying, “Tourists and the tourist vehicles ferrying tourists from Assam should come to Meghalaya without any worry or agony.”
While both the states are being “plagued with the same problem of infiltration”, and KSU and AASU have supported each other in their “quest for survival and protection” of the indigenous people, the unions said.
However, it is pertinent that both the governments of Assam and Meghalaya have thorough dialogue on the issue and solve the problem permanently, the statement added.
They also urged tourists’ taxis associations from both states to maintain cordial relationships and a spirit of common understanding even as it added that the KSU will take positive initiative in this regard.
