The All Meghalaya Domestic Workers’ Union (AMDWU) are feeling ignored as their demands for recognition to fell protected and secured continue to remain unheard.
According to the union, there are around 3000 domestic helps that are registered with the union but the state government has never focussed on their needs put forth since 2012.
Vice president of the union, E Nongkhlaw said the daily wages is low when compared to the working hours even as no considerations are made when domestic helps fall ill.
She said there should be a law that should regulate employment, and conditions of work, and provide social protection.
“We have urged the government to give us the recognition several times so that we may also have a sense of safety and security,” Nongkhlaw said. She added with several memorandums the government has never responded to their plea.
The union also said that they have received many complaints from workers who are victims of suppression. In such cases, the union leaders said, they are collaborating with police and other related departments.
