Shillong, Jul 27: A documentary film titled A’chik Kol – The Uncharted Caves of South Garo Hills has won first place in the professional category at the 19th International Congress of Speleology held in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
Directed by Gregory Allya Warjri and produced by NOMADS Film, the documentary chronicles the journey of international explorers, scientists and local cavers during the Core Geo Caving Expedition 2024 in Garo Hills.
A highlight of the expedition was the discovery of a prehistoric whale fossil in Tolegre, made possible by the efforts of local team members Milton Manda Sangma and Salban Manda Sangma, who worked alongside an international team member.
The film has already gained international recognition, with screenings at the Hidden Earth UK Caving Conference and Le Festival des Voyageurs d’Ici in Switzerland.
The filmmakers have expressed their gratitude to the team members, district administration, local guides, and the people of Tolegre and Nokatgre for their support.
This achievement puts Meghalaya on the global speleological map, highlighting the state’s rich underground heritage, storytelling, and spirit of exploration.
