Congress leader Manuel Badwar has said religion and politics should not be mixed.
His comment came amid the controversial remark of Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma for his remarks blaming ‘a particular religion’ for the loss of the BJP and its allies in Meghalaya, Nagaland and Manipur.
Badwar stated the remark is a response to the BJP’s weakening influence in the Northeast. “He has made a divisive statement about other’s religion and beliefs and he seems to think, say and do as he pleases,” he said.
Sarma had on June 4 said, “In Meghalaya, Nagaland and Manipur a particular religion went against NDA. That has made the difference as that religion has tremendous followers in those states. It is not a political defeat. Nobody can fight against a religion.”
The Congress leader viewed Sarma as a leader that lacks leadership qualities and foresees the decline of BJP in Assam and the country.
Further, Badwar also slammed Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma for his comment that “politicians use religion to lure voters.”
He said the minister has made a thoughtless statement. “It is a pity that people have chosen such leaders that can only hinder the peace and development of the state,” he added.
