NPP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar has claimed that the vote share of the Voice of the People Party (VPP) has gone down during the district council polls and may decrease by 80 per cent in 2028.
The VPP singlehandedly carried 17 seats in the Khasi Hills and came second to NPP in Jaintia Hills with eight wins.
However, according to Dhar the digits gained by the VPP had decreased from around 5.70 lakh it won in Lok Sabha to 3.71 lakh. He said the NPP digit was around 2.80, which shows that his party is on the upswing.
“During the Lok Sabha polls the VPP swept the elections in Khasi Hills region but now they won only 17 seats,” he quipped
“By 2028 the VPP may decrease by 80 per cent you do not know and we are working towards that,” he added.
Thanking the people of Jaintia Hills for giving the NPP 13 seats, Dhar added that he respects the mandate of the people in Khasi Hills.
He said as the people of Jaintia Hills have reposed faith in the NPP, the party will work hard in that region.
Dhar was comfortable with 10 wins made by MDA partners in the Khasi Hills (UDP 5, NPP 4 and HSPDP 1) despite being thumped in the 2024 Lok Sabha Polls.
