The National People’s Party (NPP) is set to form the new executive committee in the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council with Thombor Shiwat returning as the Chief Executive Member (CEM).
The NPP has got the support of its ally the United Democratic Party and two independents.
The NPP claimed 13 seats at the recently concluded elections, the votes of which were counted yesterday. The party now has the support of 18 elected MDCs.
NPP general secretary and deputy chief minister Sniawbhalang Dhar said an independent candidate who won the Rymbai-Khliehriat seat, Violet Lyngdoh, has joined the party.
“We also held a meeting with our coalition partner – United Democratic Party (UDP), which won 3 seats and Independent MDC from Jowai South Moonlight Pariat and with their support we have decided to form the new EC in the JHADC with the strength of 18 MDCs,” Dhar said.
The meeting also decided to again nominate Shiwat as the CEM, he added.
With this, 18 MDCs will be supporting the NPP-led Executive Committee.
Regarding the poor performance of the party in the KHADC polls, Dhar said, “We got only 4 seats from Khasi Hills, we will do a postmortem to find out the reason”.
