The Director General of Police, R Chandranathan, has personally contacted senior police officials in Assam regarding the fate of the Khasi residents of Atukhal village, who have been on the receiving end of threats by a militant group.
The Khasis residing in the Cachar district village fled for safety in a local church after an extortion demand accompanied by threats of violence, by the Hmar People’s Convention – Democratic (HPC-D) rebel group.
In a press release today, Assistant Inspector General of Police, GK Iangrai, said that Assam Police informed the DGP that its forces had secured the church in which the villagers have taken shelter.
The Meghalaya Police thus requested the general public to “refrain from circulating rumours or misinformation” on the subject, which may incite breaches of communal harmony.
