Shillong, May 12: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Siju regional unit, has voiced its support for the demand to suspend the current process to transfer the NH-217 project to the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL).
The objection was raised by Constitutional Rights Forum president Greneth M. Sangma, who cited systemic negligence in the management of the project, which was also supported by the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People.
The GSU also wrote to Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari in support of the demand. The union highlighted that is opposition to the transfer of the NH 217 ((Dudhnoi–Baghmara–Dalu) project to the NHIDCL is based on the substandard results witnessed on other regional projects.
It pointed to the “unsatisfactory status and lack of durability” of the Tura–Dalu Road and the rapid deterioration of the Shillong–Baghmara road previously under NHIDCL.
