The decision for the Congress Party to join forces with the National People’s Party (NPP) led to heated debate within the ranks of the party, senior Congressman Pynshngain N Syiem said today.
However, Syiem, who was made Deputy Chief Executive Member after the alliance came into being, justified the decision, saying that the Congress had achieved much by being in power.
The Congress’s chief justification was that it wanted stability within the KHADC until the amendment to the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution was passed by Parliament.
“We are happy to say that in the EC (executive committee) led by Pyniaid Sing Syiem of the NPP, we have done many things that have been recognised by law. We can say that this is the common minimum programme that we have achieved,” he said.
He, however, admitted that they have been pressured for the past several months by the Youth Congress and Mahila Congress not to work with the NPP.
“When we listen to our party workers and all the comments in social media it seems that people are not happy with the NPP. But here, by working together, we have done many good things together for the interest of all,” Syiem said.
He refused to give a clear answer if the party will pull support for the NPP-led EC in the KHADC. Syiem explained that, as a national party, this decision has to come from the party high command.
