A lively debate was conducted for the students of Khadar Dalloi Law College here on the topic ‘Prisoners in India should be allowed to cast their vote during election’, which took place today on the college campus with students presenting strong arguments on both sides.
The debate was adjudicated by B Majaw, Secretary of the District Legal Service Authority (DLSA) of West Jaintia Hills.
In his opening remarks, NA Khan, District and Session Judge of West Jaintia Hills, emphasised the importance of the topic, linking it to democracy, the constitution and rehabilitation. He encouraged the students to present well-reasoned arguments and engaged in constructive discussion.
The students presented their arguments effectively, presenting well-researched points from both perspectives. Supporters focused on democratic rights and rehabilitation while the opponents emphasised security concerns and legal constraints.
The title of best team was awarded to those opposing the motion, while E Syngkon was recognised as the best speaker supporting the motion.
The debate was chaired by FB Passah, Assistant Legal Aid Defence Counsel.
