The East Jaiñtia Hills Deputy Commissioner has cautioned people against consuming fishes from Lukhar River.
This came following reports that many fishes died in the river due to pollution caused by waste dumped by cement plants.
The Khasi Students Union, (KSU) Narpuh Circle and Sonapyrdi Tourism and Economic Development Society (STEDS) had also lodged a complaint on the matter.
It has also been reported that people from nearby villages went to collect dead fishes from the river, a press release said today.
“In order to prevent any possible health hazards, the Deputy Commissioner has appealed to the general public and villagers residing along the river bank to not consume the dead fishes from the river as it may cause serious health problems,” the release said.
