Former speaker of the Assembly, Martin M Danggo, today joined the BJP ahead of the February 27 state election where he is expected to contest the Ranikor seat.
Danggo joined the saffron party with some of his supporters at the state BJP office here today. The party has yet to announce its candidates for the polls, though a meeting was being held in New Delhi today to finalise the matter.
The five-term MLA won the 2018 election on a Congress ticket but resigned so that he could move into the camp of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP). However, he then went on to lose the resulting by-election. Recently, there were accusations by his supporters that NPP figures were plotting with other parties to make sure that Danggo lost the upcoming election, which saw him quit in favour of the BJP.
Danggo was welcomed into the saffron fold by cabinet minister Sanbor Shullai, who congratulated the newcomer on joining the party and said that they will work together for the upliftment of the poor and for more development for the state.
