The Civil Society Women’s Organisation (CSWO) has demanded immediate rehabilitation for the children of a woman who was burnt by her husband in a case of domestic violence in Niriang village, West Jaiñtia Hills district.
The domestic abuse survivor was set on fire on September 26, 2024 by her husband Dahun Dkhar. The incident came to the fore on November 18.
According to Kharshiing, her 1.3 year old infant also received burn injuries on the day of the incident.
“All expenses for her treatment should be supported by the government. We also urge the authorities to take steps to protect, rehabilitate and educate her other children, all minors who have undergone the trauma of witnessing such domestic violence. The survivor should be provided with ration card and MHIS and other government facilities ,” CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing said.
The CSWO also lauded the whistleblower, who exposed the abuse, setting an example that such instances should not be hidden and allow women and children to suffer in silence.
It is learnt that her six children are traumatised that they have refused to live in their own house but have been taken in by their eldest aunt who lives in the same village.
The eldest, a girl is said to be working as a domestic help in Shillong, the second child, a boy, 12 years of age was put to work as a cow-herder.
SCPCR chairperson Agatha Sangma had said that the commission would take up their case and give them protection.
