The Civil Society Women’s Organisation (CSWO) president Agnes Kharshiing has strongly condemned the double gang rape of two minor girls in Garo Hills and demanded speedy investigation and stringent action against the perpetrators.
According to the South West Garo Hills police, the twin incidents took place on the evening of April 16 when around eight men are alleged to have committed two separate acts of gangrape against minor girls who were in the area for a mela in Gandhipara. Two boys accompanying the girls, were assaulted by the gang of rapists.
FIRs were filed on April 18 and police began immediate investigations. With reports that the perpetrators were all from a particular community, the police warned the public against spreading misinformation.
Stating that cases of crimes against women are on the rise, Kharshiing said that stringent action and stronger laws will ensure more safety for women but, in the absence of stricter laws, the culprits are indulging in such acts thinking they can get away with it.
