A change in financial criteria has led to a fall in 90 percent of the number of students who apply for post-matriculation scholarships and the state government wants the Centre to revert to the old formula, Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said today.
Speaking at a function at a school in West Khasi Hills, Rymbui said the government has written to the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs to restore the earlier financial criteria.
Currently, tribal students are eligible for post-matric scholarships if their family income is less than Rs 2.5 lakh.
Last year only 7,000 Meghalaya students applied for the scholarship, which is less than 10 per cent of the 79,000 that applied for it in 2015-16.
