The build-up to Christmas is growing day by day and so too is the traffic, as Shillong is besieged by shoppers and holidaymakers cramming its already crowded streets.
The Shillong Traffic Police are considering ways to reduce the traffic chaos in Khyndailad, ranging from advising the public not to use their cars in the area, creation of alternative routes, etc.
Speaking to Highland Post, Superintendent of Police Kamakhya Prasad today said that the volume of traffic has increased.
“An order has been issued concerning drunk driving. Similarly, an order will be out concerning plying of vehicles and also if any diversion will be required,” Prasad said.
There is currently no diversion of traffic away from Khyndailad. However, only four SPTS buses are allowed to move through Khyndailad at a time. The SP did add, though, that if there is a concert or other programme in the city centre, police may resort to diverting traffic proceeding to Mawkhar or Motphran through Keating Road.
