Shillong, Aug 23: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has been hospitalised after being diagnosed with scrub typhus and typhoid.
The CM reported feeling unwell yesterday, a day after he attended a football match in Shillong, with high fever and other symptoms of illness. Initially he was treated at home but, after blood tests, he was diagnosed with scrub typhus and typhoid.
Sangma was admitted to Shillong Civil Hospital today due to persistent high fever. Medications have been provided by senior specialists and his condition is being closely observed. He therefore missed the first day of the Assembly session.
Although he still suffers from severe symptoms, his vitals are within the normal range and he is being treated under constant supervision.
Scrub typhus is also known as bush typhus. It is caused by the intracellular parasite Orientia tsutsugamushi, a type of bacteria transmitted through the bite of mites. Typhoid is another but different bacterial disease spread by eating or drinking food or water contaminated with the feces of an infected person.
