The Congress party has today suspended the membership of two of its MLAs for six years for “anti party activities”.
Nongstoin MLA Gabriel Wahlang and Mawhati MLA Charles Marngar were suspended based on reports that the legislators were planning to join the NPP.
“This decision is based on recent reports from the Block Committee and Frontal Organisation which indicate your association with the MDA government. Such actions are in direct conflict with the party ideologies and principles, necessitating this disciplinary measure,” said a letter sent to the two MLAs and signed by Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) general secretary Wansuk Syiem.
It may be noted that both Wahlang and Marngar are also MDCs of the Congress.
The State Congress leadership today called Wahlang, Marngar and Umsning MLA Celestine Lyngdoh to a special meeting to explain on media reports about their intention to switch over to the NPP.
However, only Lyngdoh turned up at the meeting where he confessed that he was promised various developmental schemes by the NPP if he decided to defect from Congress.
Irked by their refusal to attend the meeting, MPCC president Vincent Pala gave his approval for suspension of the membership of Wahlang and Marngar for six years.
Earlier today, Marngar along with his supporters met Chief Minister and NPP national president Conrad Sangma where he placed demands for creation of Mawhati Community and Rural Development Block, repair of the Sonidan-Umsiang road among others.
Sangma gave his assurance for sanctioning of the Mawhati C&RD Block. He also assured that the Sonidan-Umsiang road would be repaired under the newly sanctioned World Bank loan. He also assured to construct school buildings in various villages in Mawhati constituency.
