Congress leader Manuel Badwar has stated that redrawing constituency boundaries in the autonomous district council would not be in the best interest of the public, if there are further delays.
He said the people have the right to choose their representative every five years and was optimistic that the delimitation committee appointed would be able to complete the task in the next few months so that the district council elections take place this year.
Badwar also suggested that the constituencies covered by MLAs and MDCs should be identical to ensure that schemes operate efficiently and to make the voting process more convenient for citizens.
The terms of the Khasi and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Councils expired on March 4. The State government had already extended the terms of the district councils for six months due to the delimitation exercise.
