Commuters had a tough time as most of them were stuck for several hours as candidates and their supporters had turned up in large numbers leading to traffic jams in the city.
The agonising traffic gridlock persist causing traffic problems on surrounding roads as traffic jams were also experienced on roads linking to these roads such as at Mawïong and Upper Shillong.
Meanwhile, filing of nominations by candidates for the upcoming February 27 Assembly elections will end tomorrow while the date for scrutiny of nominations is February 8.
The last date for withdrawal of nominations by candidates is February 10.
Altogether 176 hopefuls filed their nomination papers across Meghalaya today, the sixth day.
In West Jaiñtia Hills, Amlarem MLA Lahkmen Rymbui and 16 others filed their papers while Congress president and Shillong MP Vincent H Pala filed his papers to contest from Sutnga-Saipung in West Jaiñtia Hills currently held by Shitlang Pale, who is running the election from UDP.
Twelve candidates filed their nomination papers in Ri-Bhoi. In East Khasi Hills, 53 candidates filed their nomination papers, two in Eastern West Khasi Hills, nine in West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills seven, North Garo Hills 15, East Garo Hills 10, West Garo Hills 31, five in South West Garo Hills and six in South Garo Hills.
