The Chief Ministers of Meghalaya and Assam have agreed for the two states to work together and to take locals into confidence regarding the Kulsi multi-purpose irrigation and hydroelectric power project.
At a consultation between the two states’ CMs in Guwahati today, it was agreed to jointly commission the project once discussions are held with the public.
This is another example of the commitment shown by the two state governments, Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma said. “When it comes to the project of Kulsi, it is a project which is clearly a win-win situation, whether it is power production, whether it is irrigation or whether it’s development of tourism on all three fronts and many more between both the states”.
The river rises in West Khasi Hills, where it is known as the Khir River, before flowing down into Assam where it merges with the Brahmaputra in Kamrup district.
The two states are currently engaged in a long-drawn out process to resolve several disputes along their long border. These disputes have periodically led to violence, in which lives have been lost on a few occasions.
Nevertheless, the two governments, which are both part of the National Democratic Alliance family, have decided to work together as “a symbol of Assam-Meghalaya friendship”.
