Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma continued to downplay the collapse of part of the retaining wall of the PA Sangma Sports Complex, saying there was nothing untoward as per the preliminary report.
The wall collapsed last week after sustained heavy rain. The government blamed the incident on waterlogging, saying that a drain had been blocked by construction work at the adjacent indoor stadium.
Asked about an FIR being filed following the incident, Sangma said that a full magisterial inquiry has been ordered even as he added that other structures like stands have not been damaged at all.
Yesterday, the opposition Trinamool Congress (TMC) questioned the effectiveness of a magisterial inquiry instead of an inspection by a qualified engineer.
“There is nothing wrong with the stadium structure and there was no damage despite heavy rain and water logging,” Sangma said today.
Even though the retaining wall was, according to the government, built to specifications, they are not taking any chances, the CM added.
“We will do a safety audit and ensure that all aspects are looked into,” he said, adding that weather conditions are much harsher in Meghalaya than elsewhere and, if there are any concerns, the government will conduct safety audits of all vital projects.
