The Central government has challenged the orders issued by the Meghalaya High Court for deployment of Central Industrial Security Forces (CISF) to help tackle illegal coal mining in Meghalaya.
Supreme Court bench of Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha today issued notice on the plea moved by the Centre against three interim orders of the Meghalaya High Court.
In February this year, the Meghalaya High Court had ordered the deployment of central paramilitary forces to monitor and stop the illegal mining of coal.
In subsequent orders, the High Court had directed the Union Home Ministry to indicate its readiness to deploy ten companies of the CISF to keep a vigil on roads and stop the transportation of illegal coal.
Earlier this month, the High Court also hinted that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) may be asked to investigate the illegal mining and transportation of coal in the State.
