Former civil servant Toki Blah has praised Chief Secretary Donald Phillips Wahlang for taking a bold decision to disallow the cow protection group to land in the state to carry out a yatra.
” I heard that Chief Minister Conrad Sangma is not in Shillong and has left this situation to be dealt with by the officers, I am proud that the Chief Secretary took the right decision and has the spine to prevent this group from carrying out the yatra in our state,” he told HP.
While it is acceptable that the district administration is responsible to look into the law and order situation, Blah stated, “We also expect that a political chief will back us up and encourage us on what to do in such a situation. If you are escaping the scene and pushing the government servant to do the task, then it only reflects cowardice as a Chief Minister.”
He said that as a chief minister, Conrad should step forward like Nagaland and other northeast state leaders. “When both the state BJP MLAs have also outrightly opposed the desire of the group, then what happened to the NPP and UDP and all its advisers? Why are they silent on the people coming to our state to tell us what to eat or not,” he questioned.
Blah said the group has acted like “fools” that could have led to chaos in the state.
He said the indigenous people have their habits, food, culture, and beliefs, and while respecting the group sentiments of not consuming beef and considering a cow as their mother, they cannot force anyone to share the same sentiments.
