The Cherry Blossom Festival’s theme this year will be ‘The Year of Legends’, Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh informed today, with Boney M and Great Society set to perform at the November 15-16 event.
Artists have been lined up from various genres, including rock, pop, R&B, Bollywood, indie, nu metal and K-pop. Kanika Kapoor and Jasleen Royal are some of the other performers and the minister also said that tribute bands to Queen and Korn will also take part.
The two-day event will take place at Madan Kurkalang in Ri-Bhoi and this year the festival is partnering with Japan, whose own relationship with cherry blossoms borders on the spiritual.
After a gap of 35 years, Meghalaya’s own Great Society will be getting back together for the Cherry Blossom Festival. “Their return is sure to enrich the musical heritage of our state,” Lyngdoh said.
This year’s headline act will be Boney M, featuring founding member Maizie Williams. Lyngdoh said that the band will be embarking on a final tour and the organisers are thrilled that Meghalaya has been included.
This ‘Year of Legends’ will culminate in December’s concert by Bryan Adams, which falls outside of the Cherry Blossom Festival.
