Beef consumption has taken a hit in Meghalaya with the spread of lumpy skin disease (LSD) among cattle in the state.
Speaking to Highland Post, Khasi-Jaintia Butcher Welfare Association (KJBWA) general secretary Generous Warlarpih said, “Whenever there are these kinds of diseases, whether it is in beef or pork, the market is always affected as the meat loses its appeal for most people.”
He sought to reassure the public that cattle that is processed at the slaughterhouse in Mawiong are safe for human consumption as they are inspected and receive a stamp of approval.
“The cattle that are slaughtered here are very safe to eat as they have been certified by doctors before and after death,” he explained.
These certificates from the slaughterhouse are displayed in butchers’ shops to give the public a sense of assurance.
