Self-styled social activist Greneth M Sangma has written to the Chief Minister to ask him to consider the introduction of an online system to obtain the Tribal Tax Exemption Certificate.
Tribals of Meghalaya, being a Sixth Schedule area, are exempt from paying income tax to the central government but “the current process for obtaining exemption certificates is cumbersome and time-consuming,” Sangma said.
He added that neighbouring states like Assam and Mizoram have implemented similar online systems and Meghalayan tribals would benefit from something similar.
