The Meghalaya cabinet today decided to extend the period that government land can be leased out for development projects to 60 years up from the previous norm of 30 years.
Cabinet minister and government spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh informed the three decade limit for government land to be leased by individuals and corporate entities, etc needs to be increased to better cater to the needs of large-scale investments and projects and attract investors.
The cabinet through the Department of Revenue and Disaster Management came up with a proposal to double the lease period.
“This is to be made further renewable for a period of an additional 30 years for projects under different investment modes,” Lyngdoh said. “This will help to incentivise, encourage and also attract investors to invest in various projects in the state, especially in sectors that are showing signs of growth and promise for further enhancing the economy of the state.”
Meanwhile, the government has also appointed retired Meghalaya Agriculture Service (MAS) officer Maqbool Lyngdoh Suiam to the post of Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of Meghalaya’s Natural and Organic Farming Society for Livelihood and Innovation in Agriculture (MEGNOLIA). Suiam will hold the post for a period of three years.
The cabinet also approved the appointment of a Registrar-cum-Secretary of the Meghalaya State Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission. “A couple of names came up before cabinet and, as per the recommendation of the department concerned, which is Food and Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department, the cabinet has agreed to the proposal to appoint Susanna D Ritshong, MSS retired, as recommended from the shortlisted candidates,” Lyngdoh added.
