Congress Party leader Ampareen Lyngdoh said today that she is sure that Meghalaya will get 90 per cent of the border territory that is part of the dispute with Assam.
Speaking today, she said, "We know that in West Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi in the first phase of the boundary dispute dialogue between the (Meghalaya and Assam) governments there is a strong probability that 9 out of 10 will be given to Meghalaya."
However, the party does not know what the situation is in the Jaiñtia Hills border dispute because it does not have an MLA on the regional committee responsible for that area. She also said that it would have been better if the government had involved the public more in the progress of the negotiations.
The ongoing talks are meant to solve the dispute in six less contentious areas. The second phase, however, will tackle the more complicated villages, such as Langpih, which is "going to be a very sensitive situation for Meghalaya". Meanwhile, Lyngdoh said that the only question that remains is whether the two CMs obey what recommendations have been made by the three regional committees. “If they go by the recommendations given by the regional committees, Meghalaya stands to gain in the long run,” she added.
