The bodies of a woman and a five-year-old child were discovered in the Umshing river in Mawlai Mawiong today.
The deceased woman, identified as Niangcy Riahtam, had been seen walking near the ISBT in Mawlai Mawiong with the child, Erika Thabah at around 10 am yesterday.
The bodies of the two were spotted by some boys who had gone to take bath in the river.
According to neighbours, Riahtam who worked at Punjab National Bank had left her home on Wednesday at around 10 am to go and see her under construction house near ISBT Mawiong.
When the child did not return home, the family members informed the office bearers of the Mawiong Dorbar Shnong around 9 am.
Other eye witnesses said that they had spotted Riahtam and the child at 4 pm, getting down on Macdonald Road, Mawiong Umjapung.
The Dorbar Shnong carried out a search for the duo till 3 am today but abandoned it.
The cause of death remains unknown at this time.
Fire and emergency services and forensic team were deployed to recover the bodies and were taken to Shillong Civil Hospital for post mortem examination to determine the cause of death.
