Residents of the Block 2 region in Ri-Bhoi, an area along the disputed interstate border between Meghalaya and Assam, have expressed serious concerns about the inadequate educational facilities in their villages. Many students are reportedly being forced to abandon their studies due to the lack of quality schools.
A public meeting was yesterday convened by Mawhati MLA Charles Marngar at Umlaper village to address the issue. Attended by village leaders, youth, teachers and parents, the meeting highlighted the absence of adequate school institutions in the region and the need for better educational infrastructure provided by the Meghalaya government.
Participants discussed the significant impact of this deficiency on students, noting that the current schools, primarily private institutions and village-run schools, cannot meet the educational standards found in other parts of the district and state. The attendees emphasised that the lack of government-run schools in the border areas has become a critical issue.
In response, Marngar and the local residents decided to escalate the matter with the state government, calling for urgent action to improve educational facilities in the border areas.
