Tura MDC Bernard Marak, also a state Bharatiya Janata Party vice-president, has claimed that the ongoing period of load shedding in Garo Hills is illegal.
In a letter to the West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Marak sought for immediate withdrawal of the power cuts, which take up as much as 10 hours in Garo Hills daily.
Marak claimed that there was no legal notification from the state government over the ongoing shutdown in the district, which means that the shutdown is illegal.
“The load shedding imposed on the common man without any legal notification or order amounts to depriving the public of their basic needs. This cannot be ignored as everyone depends on electricity these days and the lack of it is causing severe hardships,” he argued.
If there is an actual order, Marak requested a copy in order that it can be challenged in consumer court.
Meanwhile, the Tura Government College Students Union has requested the Power Minister to reduce the long hours of power cuts so that students can properly prepare for their exams.
