State Congress Party leader Manuel Badwar has rubbished claims of a potential change in the party leadership or another damaging split.
Speaking to Highland Post recently, Badwar stated that the Meghalaya Congress is focused on strengthening its grassroots presence. The party recently held a review meeting to discuss reactivating its block and district units.
The party has been sailing in rough waters ever since it lost the 2018 state election, with numerous defections and a string of bad results at the polls. The recent KHADC and JHADC elections were another blow to the Congress’s hopes of a comeback, with the party wiped out in the former and just three seats won in the latter.
Badwar stressed that the party’s performance in the elections is a collective responsibility as an organisation and one cannot put the entire blame on the state party president, Vincent Pala.
When asked, he noted that the Congress has ample time to prepare and reorganise for the 2028 state assembly elections. He also said that the party will hold multiple review meetings to assess its performance and make necessary adjustments.
Meanwhile, Badwar, who has contested twice, and lost, on a Congress ticket, affirmed his loyalty to the party, stating he will continue to stick with it.
