In view of the forthcoming General Election to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, 2025 and the coming into effect of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), the Ri-Bhoi district administration and Sohra Civil Sub Division has imposed Section 163 under Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.
The order has come into immediate effect and will remain in force until the completion of the election process.
According to the election authorities in order to ensure the peaceful, free and fair conduct of the KHADC General Election has prohibited the carrying of cash exceeding Rs. 50,000 or gold/silver without valid supporting documents.
Wall wrings, pasting of posters/papers, or erecting and displaying cut-outs, hoardings, and banners on public property including government and semi-government buildings/properties without prior permission from the appropriate authorities is also prohibited.
Any violation of the MCC by political parties, contesting candidates and election agents is also prohibited.
Moreover this order also prohibits the carrying of any type of arms and explosives within the entire district of Ri Bhoi District and Sohra Civil Sub Division until the election process is concluded.
However this order shall not apply to law enforcement authorities, including police personnel, Home Guards, Forest Personnel, BSF, and CMPF personnel.
All arms license holders are required to deposit their weapons along with a Xerox copy of their licenses at the nearest police station within 14 days from promulgation of this order.
Any person found in violation of the above provisions shall be subject to persecution under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023 as well as other applicable laws governing such actions.
