The Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) has disconnected power to 10 households that were drawing supply illegally through the Shri Aurobindo Institute of Indian Culture (SAIIC).
Yesterday, MeECL officials led by Assistant Executive Engineer, Investigation and Enforcement Sub Division (Shillong Circle), Yupher Passah, along with the SDO Revenue, R Kharnaïor, and engineers from the vigilance wing undertook an inspection of the area.
During this inspection it was found out that houses in the vicinity of the SAIIC were provided power illegally by the institute.
Speaking to reporters, Passah said that during the inspection it was found that the meter meant only for SAIIC was used to supply power to the houses.
He said that the institute uses a 10kW meter but the MeECL found that it had exceeded the limit because of the power being distributed through the same meter to the settlements nearby.
The MeECL officials disconnected the power connections to these 10 houses after learning about the irregularities.
The authorities of the corporation also said that it will send a compensation bill to SAIIC for exceeding 10kW of power usage. Passah also said that the 10 homes have to apply for their own electricity connections and will be hooked up to the grid properly if the residents have the requisite documentation.
