Assam Rifles organised the second edition of the Assam Rifles Annual Women’s Football Tournament for teams across all the states of the North East.
Branded as the Sentinels Cup, as Assam Rifles are known as the ‘Sentinels of the North East’, seven women’s football teams from Meghalaya, Assam, Nagaland, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Assam Rifles participated in the tournament.
The first phase of the event was conducted at Lokra, Assam, beginning on March 16. Semifinals were played between the teams of Assam Rifles and Meghalaya and between Tripura and Assam. The final was contested between Assam Rifles and Tripura today at the Assam Rifles headquarters in Laitkor here, with the hosts’ own team winning the title match and cash prize of Rs 3.5 lakh.
The final was graced by Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera, Director General of Assam Rifles and Vibha Lakhera, president of the Assam Rifles Wives Welfare Association. The medals for the event were given by Vibha Lakhera and the trophies were presented by Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera.
