Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today reaffirmed his government’s commitment to jointly work with Meghalaya in addressing the pollution in Byrnihat and solve pending border disputes.
Speaking to reporters after attending the passing-out parade at the North East Police Academy (NEPA) in Umiam, he stressed the need for sustained cooperation between the two states.
“Byrnihat belongs to both Assam and Meghalaya, obviously we have shared responsibility and I will work with the Meghalaya government to ensure pollution levels come down,” he stated.
Sarma also said both the states are keen to resolve border disputes in six areas between Assam and Meghalaya. “We are eager to resolve the six pending border disputes. Out of these, three we can resolve at any point of time. We are working together,” he said.
The Assam Chief Minister said that the process of resolving the border dispute is sensitive. “It involves people’s sentiments of both the states so putting a time frame is not good but we will resolve sooner than later,” he said.
He further added that the Survey of India is conducting the demarcation, and any agreements signed in the presence of the Union Home Minister are binding on both governments.
