The Ri-Bhoi District ASHA Association orchestrated a meeting and rally in Nongpoh to protest over the state government’s inaction to their demand for increased pay.
ASHAs have been holding protests around the state since earlier this month and have stopped work despite the government’s pleas.
The rally was in support of the Meghalaya ASHA Workers Union (MAWU) in its ongoing efforts to address the welfare concerns of all ASHAs in Meghalaya.
The participants at today’s march walked from Pahamsyiem playground to the NSCA Indoor Stadium displaying placards and banners to express solidarity with the MAWU.
The government has so far been unwilling to grant higher honorariums to the community health workers but has repeatedly pointed out that, with incentives, ASHAs can earn several thousands of rupees per month on top of their standard pay of Rs 2,000.
