The Meghalaya ASHA Workers Union (MAWU) today criticised Health and Family Welfare Minister James Sangma over his answers in the Assembly yesterday.
ASHA workers in the state are aggrieved that the government has yet to pay their honorariums for years. They also want an increase in their monthly stipend.
ASHA workers held a protest at the Secretariat in Shillong on March 4 over the pending issues and today MAWU thanked Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem for raising the matter in the Assembly.
However, MAWU adviser Sony Kharjana said that the ASHAs are not happy with the minister’s responses, especially when he said that ASHA workers are getting incentives of Rs 4,000 per month. In fact, Kharjana said, they get only half that and if they were paid Rs 4,000 a month they would be happy enough and not be seeking an increase.
