The Indian Army has been conducting a survey of farmland around Mawshbuit, which has thoroughly disturbed the local population, the Khasi Students Union (KSU) claimed today.
The issue is significant as there is an ongoing dispute between the military at the 58 Gorkha Training Centre (GTC) and the residents of Mawshbuit. The village is only accessible by road along a route adjacent to the GTC camp and which the army had closed to civilian traffic in April. This led to a fracas where four KSU members were injured.
Although the state government tried to resolve the issue, there has been no solution as yet.
The KSU’s Mawshbuit unit visited farms that were allegedly being surveyed by the army but, by then, no military personnel were present, the pressure group said today. The KSU added that it will follow up on the matter.
