Illegal smuggling of essential commodities to Bangladesh has been reported by the Songsak circle of the Achik Organisation for the Social Welfare (AOSW).
The organisation has lodged a complaint with the deputy commissioners of East Garo Hills, North Garo Hills and South Garo Hills districts today.
According to the AOSW, essential commodities such as cattle, drugs, rice, sugar, dried arecanut, clothing items, etc are being smuggled in large quantities to the neighbouring country though a number of miscreants are being intercepted by authorities.
“Smuggling of the essential commodities has risen in recent months, which poses a threat to our domestic markets and the economy of the state,” AOSW president John Techang Ch Marak said in the complaint.
He said smuggling has led to inflation of essential commodities and urged the district heads to take strong action to prevent such illegalities.
