Nongpoh, Oct 9: The authorities in Ri-Bhoi have kept up their drive against traffic violators in the district.
The action was launched recently after a number of deadly road accidents on highways caused by reckless driving, often while the drivers are intoxicated.
Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal, Superintendent of Police (SP) Vivekanand Singh Rathore and District Transport Officer A Kharmon jointly conducted a surprise inspection and enforcement drive along the highway to check traffic violations.
Today’s checking took place in Nongpoh, Byrnihat, Khanapara, Umsning and Khapmara, where police and officials took strict action by imposing fines on vehicles found violating traffic rules.
The enforcement drive targeted a wide range of violations such as drunk driving, riding without helmets, speeding and failure to carry valid documents.
During the course of the operation, a substantial number of vehicles were fined through the e-challan system and, as of the time of reporting, fines amounting to nearly Rs 3 lakh had already been collected from violators. The district authorities informed that the inspection and enforcement drive will continue in the coming days to ensure road safety and strict compliance with traffic regulations.
