The Roman Catholic Church’s annual eucharistic procession will take place on November 12 at the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians in Laitumkhrah here.
Organisers have invited all the faithful of Shillong archdiocese, as well as Jowai and Nongstoin dioceses to the procession.
Prayers from 9:15am start the day’s events. The Apostolic Nuncio (the Holy See’s ambassador) to India and Nepal, Most Rev Leopoldo Girelli, will be present on the occasion along with Shillong Archbishop Most Rev Victor Lyngdoh and three newly ordained bishops – Most Rev Wilbert Marwein of Nongstoin, Most Rev Ferdinand Dkhar of Jowai and Most Rev Joachim Walder, Auxiliary Bishop of Aizawl.
In the afternoon, the procession will start at 1:30pm and proceed from the Calvary via Dhankheti, the Shillong-Jowai Road, Laitumkhrah Main Road, Don Bosco Square and back to Calvary.
Parking arrangements have been made in Madan Iew Rynghep, St Edmund’s College, MIIT Brookdene, St Margaret’s Convent, St Mary’s Convent, St Anthony’s HS School mini stadium, Christ King College, Don Bosco Technical School, parking lot of Loreto School (Hopkinson Road) and Malki playground.
Other vehicles may park on one side of the road at Barik Point leading to Pine Mount School and Seven Set School, Lower Lachumiere from Horse Shoe building to DIPR, Treasury office, opposite Additional Secretariat to Barik Point, behind Raj Bhavan, in front of Don Bosco Hall (Hopkinson Road), Jacob’s Ladder, Boyce Road to Shillong College and BK Bajoria School.
Traffic volunteers will be posted in all the parking lots and organisers have requested vehicle owners to kindly cooperate so that vehicles are parked in a systematic manner to ensure maximum capacity and free flow of traffic. Those parking on the road side are requested to park on single file and to avoid parking in places where it will hinder the free flow of traffic.
In a joint decision with the local administration, the entire length of the road from Dhankheti, Shillong-Jowai Road, Laitumkhrah Main Road, Don Bosco Square to Calvary has been declared as a no parking zone for the day.
Plying of vehicles on the Dhankheti-Don Bosco Square stretch will be closed from 8:45am until the completion of the event.
No entry restrictions for all vehicles on the Shillong-Jowai Road at Barik Point and Fire Brigade up to 3:30 pm till the procession passes the Fire Brigade point.
The local administration has also declared a no vending zone on that day for the areas along the procession route.
