The All Meghalaya Minority Students’ Union (AMMSU) has written to the Ministry for Human Resource Development seeking a Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) in the village of Patranga in West Garo Hills.
In a letter sent to the union minister, AMMSU said that there has been a lack of quality educational institutions in the district of West Garo Hills, which has a population of over 7.3 lakhs and an area of 3677 sq km.
AMMSU through their memo asked for a JNV to be set up at Patranga village under Selsella C&RD Block for classes VI to XII.
“As most people live below the poverty line (BPL), affording education outside the state is difficult. This has caused tremendous hardships for children in need of quality education,” said AMMSU president, Nur Islam.
Islam added that there were hardly any CBSE institutions in West Garo Hills in its rural areas.
“As has been envisaged in the National Education Policy – 1986, for the set up of a JNV in each district as stated in the NEP of 2020 as well we request for a set up of a JNV in the area. For the set up of the school, people of the area have also decided to provide land free of cost for the endeavour,” added Islam.
