Tura, Jul 1: The All Meghalaya Minority Students’ Union (AMMSU) has written to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, seeking the declaration of floods in the plain belt between Tikrikilla in West Garo Hills district to Mahendraganj in South West Garo Hills district on the contention that thousands have been driven homeless due to the rise in the Brahmaputra and Jinjiram rivers.
In a memorandum submitted today, the NGO said that the rising waters had already submerged most of the farmlands while also entering houses, leading to many people being forced to flee to the roadside. However despite the gravity of the situation, the respective district administrations have not yet declared the areas flood hit.
